New updated SMS Patch Management Pack could save enterprises and government departments millions of US dollars. By in Products, United States. March 27, 2007. If you have been looking for a patch management product and you currently have Microsoft System Management Server SMS running in your enterprise, then your search is over because you already have one. Microsoft has released a feature pack for SMS 2.0 that allows it to connect to Software Update Services, which is basically a combination of Windows Update and Office Update but for enterprises. The tools The SMS Software Update Services feature pack is available for download at the SMS Web site. The feature pack requires SMS 2.0 running at least SP3 but Microsoft recommends SP4.
The feature pack consists of four separate tools that give SMS the functionality to provide a complete patch management solution. The Security Update Inventory Installer SecurityPatchi386.exe installs three tools that create an inventory of applicable and installed security patches. These are: Security Update Inventory Installer: Installed on the SMS site server. Automatically builds the collection, package, and advertisements needed to install the other tool components.Security Update Inventory Tool: Uses Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer technology together with the security patch bulletin catalog, MSSecure.xml, to perform ongoing scans of client computers to detect installed and missing patches.Security Update Sync Tool: Downloads the latest security bulletin catalogs and distributes them to client computers via SMS distribution points.
The Office Update Installer Tool OfficePatchi386.exe installs three tools that perform the same functions as the above security tools to detect needed updates for Office products installed on client computers. Since these tools are very similar to the security tools, I will not cover them directly in this article. The Distribute Software Updates Wizard Installer PatchWizi386.exe tool manages software distribution tasks. It consists of three components: Distribute Software Updates Wizard Installer: Installed on the SMS site server. This tool installs the Distribute Software Updates Wizard.Distribute Software Updates Wizard: This tool is responsible for software update distribution on the SMS site server.
It downloads updates, builds packages and advertisements, and deploys the Software Updates Installation Agent.Software Updates Installation Agent: This component facilitates the installation of necessary updates and prevents redundant updates from being installed. The Web Reports Add-In for Software Updates SMSWebReportingi386.exe and SMSAddReportsi386.exe provides added functionally to the existing SMS reporting tool. It allows tracking of individual updates, computers, and groups.
Cleanmymac 2 2 2 0 cracked windshield. Installation The download will extract into four separate folders, each containing an executable for each tool along with README and help files. A white paper is also included.
Begin the installation by installing the Security Update Inventory Installer. The opening dialog in Figure A will appear, allowing you to select the components to be created and the installed site server. Figure A Next, a prompt will appear to specify a machine with Internet access to download the patch database see Figure B. The default setting for updating the database is once a week. I recommend changing this to daily after the installation is complete. Figure B The final wizard prompt asks for the name of a machine to be used for testing. The initial package deployment will be limited to this computer until you are ready to install the patches on production machines.
Opening the SMS administrator console will reveal the Collections, Packages, and Advertisements created by the Installer tool Figure C. Figure C Next, install the Distribute Software Updates Wizard. Installation is straightforward with very few prompts. When the installation is complete, a Distribute Software Updates option will be present in the All Tasks menu Figure D. Figure D The final component to install is the Web Reporting Tool.
This tool is not required for patch management to function, but the reports are more detailed than the results from the resource explorer. I found the dashboard function to be a useful window into the SMS system. The Web reporting add-ons installation is the lengthiest of all the tools, requiring more information from the user during installation.
Be prepared to supply the location of the SMS database, the location for Web reporting files, the SQL SA user password, and the anonymous user account password. Using the tools Once all the components are installed, the SMS site is ready to function as a patch management tool. The general concept of the tool package is as follows: Security Update Installer builds deployment packages for scan toolScan tool is distributed to client machines through SMS distributionClients report missing patches during scheduled hardware inventory cyclesSMS admin authorizes patches to be deployedSMS deploys patchesWeb reporting tool or resource explorer verifies successful installation Let s take a look at the individual steps involved in the process and push a patch to a machine. First, verify that the scan tool is deployed on the test machine and a hardware cycle is completed.
Select the collection the PC belongs to in the SMS console. Right-click on the machine and select All Tasks. Select Resource Explorer. Expand the Hardware tab. An entry titled Software Updates should be present see Figure E. Figure E If the entry is not present, examine the hardware inventory cycle in SMS and allow it to run sooner. By default, the hardware inventory is disabled on the primary site to reduce overhead.
The default interval is seven days. Microsoft recommends that the interval be increased for testing purposes, but cautions about the increased traffic generated. Also check the SMS logs for any errors that may have occurred in distribution. If the scan tool is working, you should see a list of patches with links to the Microsoft Q article, as well as their status as either applicable or installed.
Installing patches The patch installation process is initiated by selecting a machine or group of machines in the collection section. Right-click and select the All Tasks option and the Distribute Software Updates selection as shown in Figure D. Click this to launch the Distribute Software Updates Wizard. This wizard is similar to the SMS Software Updates Wizard, but with extra dialogs specific to the security scan tool. After selecting the package that you want to distribute and allowing the title to be selected, the dialog in Figure F appears, prompting you to select an inventory-scanning program.
The installed security update tool should be selected. Figure F Next, the wizard displays a list of available updates see Figure G. Figure G Select an update by clicking the check box. To see details about each update, select an update and then click the Information button.
In order to install updates, the source files must be downloaded by SMS. The next dialog box allows selection of a source files directory.
The dialog box also presents the option to download the source files manually. Unless you have a reason to change the defaults, leave them as set see Figure H. Clicking the Next button will initiate a download of any needed update files. Figure H The next dialog see Figure I presents the status of selected updates.
Figure I If a Yes appears under the Ready column, the update is downloaded and ready to be deployed. If No appears, click the Properties button and the dialog in Figure J will appear.
Figure J Click the Make This Update Valid For All Client Locales check box and add any command line options, if needed. Microsoft recommends that command line parameters be specified with each update to minimize user interaction and reduce system reboots. The Syntax button will direct you to the Knowledge Base article on the update and provide the command line options specific to the patch. Once you have completed this screen, the status in the Ready column should now display Yes. The next dialogs are common SMS installation dialogs and prompt you to create distribution points and allow you to configure advertisements for the packages.
Critical security updates should not be allowed to be postponed by the user. The agents dialog box allows reboots to be postponed on critical systems, such as servers. The final dialog allows the package to be advertised to client computers. In the case of security updates, advertisements may not be necessary, since the SMS admin will likely make the packages mandatory and force installation. Verify installation After the deployment has occurred, the successful installation can be verified by using the resource explorer or the Web-reporting tool. The Web-reporting tool has many predefined reports specific to security patch deployment.

Figure K shows a partial listing of reports. Figure K The report is selected on the left pane and the necessary additional information is entered on the right. Clicking the Display button generates and displays the results in a separate window see Figure L.
Custom reports can also be generated by manually entering SQL commands. Figure L Summary This Software Update Services feature pack add-on can turn your SMS system into a powerful tool for patch management.
If you re a seasoned SMS pro, the security tool add-on should be easy to implement in your current enterprise. The supplied white paper provides good background and many important considerations for implementing and using the tools. However, it is not a good step-by-step guide. If you are new to SMS, you may want to get your feet wet first with the basic SMS concepts before using the software updating tools. We conclude our coverage of SMS role in Windows patch management with an examination of configuration requirements and application prerequisites. Patch Management is fast becoming a major priority for most organisations struggling to keep their systems up-to-date and protected by applying various patches.
Build Your Skills: Use SMS for patch management by deploying this feature pack If you have been looking for a patch management product and you currently have Microsoft System Management Server SMS running in your enterprise, then your. With Microsoft discontinuing support for Software Update Services SUS, organizations using the patch management tool have a decision to make. For our final look at Microsoft s patch management solutions, we overview the latest iteration of SMS 2.0 SUS Feature Pack, as implemented in the recently released. Setting SMSINSTALLDIRPATH Environment variable on SCCM site servers for SCOM SCCM management pack. MICROSOFT MANAGEMENT SUMMIT, SAN DIEGO, CA, USA, MARCH 27, 2007 – 1E, a leading provider of software products and professional services for Windows Management.
Besides the changes outlined above, which impact software distribution (including software updates), several patch management specific features differ from the original release of SMS 2.0 SUS Feature Pack, such as:. Distribute Software Updates Wizard (which can be launched from a Software Updates node in the SMS Administrator Console) became an integral part of SMS 2003.
In SMS 2.0, the update wizard was required to. In addition, since the underlying engine for Security Scan is based on Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer, in fresh installations of SMS 2003, the Security scan tool displayed in the wizard is referred to as MBSA (for upgrades from SMS 2.0, MBSA entry is created along with the Security Tool scanning program entry). SMS 2003 Administrator Console also contains, by default, the Software Updates Installation Agent entry. It is possible to specify arbitrarily selected reference computer when running Distribute Software Updates Wizard. This allows you to approve a patch update (and create a relevant package) even if SMS client inventory does not need it. Within the wizard, you can specify the time periods that installations can be performed.
This helps prevent reboots of workstations or servers outside of a scheduled maintenance window. With another feature, called dynamic package configuration, it is possible to create multiple programs for a single package and set criteria based on which each program will be applied to a different collection (with different settings). Web Reports for patch management have been integrated into SMS Management Console under the Reports node. Note that if you are upgrading from SMS 2.0 to SMS 2003, you should uninstall the Web Reporting tool and Add-in Reports for Software Upgrades (upgrade will not, however, affect existing patch packages and patch settings).
The method of reporting patch installation status has been modified to reflect the state of SMS clients more accurately. This applies, for example, to computers where a patch has been installed but a required reboot has not yet taken place.
Recuva professional keygen rar 2016 - free and torrent. In SMS 2.0, this was reported as installed; in SMS 2003, the range of states of patch installation has been considerably extended to include success, restart pending, retrying, postponed, failed, and uninstalled. While scan tools are still provided as separate downloads that must be installed on the Site Server, their location is different from their SMS 2.0 SUS Feature Pack equivalents. The Security Update Scan Tool and the Microsoft Office Inventory Tool for Updates are available from. Proxy authentication for unattended Sync host operations can be configured with PatchDownloader.exe tool (located in the SMS bin i39 folder on the SMS server), using the following syntax: PatchDownloader.exe /s: ProxyServer: Port /u: UserName You will then be prompted for the password, which will be stored, along with the UserName, in encrypted format in a registry key on the Sync host computer. This step must be taken, along with the: modifying the command line of the program for the Sync tool package to make it run in unattended manner, configuring the update of distribution points on schedule, setting proxy configuration on a per-machine basis (rather than a per-user basis, as is the case with group policy), and creating a Scan tool package source folder local on the Sync host computer. Note that in unattended mode (i.e., with no user logged on), Sync tool executes in the security context of the Local System account if the Sync host is installed on an SMS 2003 Advanced client (for this purpose, standard clients use SMSCliToknAcct& account). SMS Advanced Client includes persistent notification feature, which provides a visual indication about the patch update status of the local computer in the form of a system tray icon (this is independent of the software update advertisement present on standard and Advanced SMS clients).
For more information on SMS 2003 Patch Management functionality (or any other related topic) refer to and. Thus far, all of the information presented in this series has been intended to provide a good understanding of the three main patch management solutions offered by Microsoft: Windows Update, Software Update Services (soon to be replaced by Windows Update Services), and Systems Management Server Software Updates. In addition to understanding these patch management options, organizations should also be aware of the recent announcements from Microsoft concerning its near-future plans. While Microsoft remains committed to its three main offerings, additional improvements are expected in (same behavior for installation and rollback, common switches and registry tags, use of MSI 3.0), efficiency (reduced patch size with binary delta compression), and manageability (in the form of fewer required reboots).
There is also a tendency (visible, for example, in SQL 2005) to offer users the ability to patch installation programs (integrate patches directly into product binaries, so installation and patching take place in a single step).
